Under the
management of Nigel Worthington, Paul McVeigh finally got the chance to shine at
first team level - and boy did he do that during 2001-2002!
Paul finished the last campaign in good form but started the new season as an
unused substitute at Millwall. However when the unfortunate Chris Llewellyn
broke his foot against Manchester City, Paul entered the fray and hit the
Canaries' second against the men from Maine Road.
From that moment on he never looked back. The Northern Ireland international was
a constant thorn in the side of many first division defenders and went on to
rack up 43 league starts for the Canaries and notched 10 goals in the process.
He netted an all-important late winner at Bradford and the second goal in the
3-1 play-off semi-final victory over Wolves as he finished the season as the
club's second highest scorer behind Iwan Roberts.
Paul's ability to play on either the left side or up front has seen him step up
from being a squad player to one of the main first team ingredients. Along with
his fellow countryman, Philip Mulryne, Paul's services were regularly called
upon by Northern Ireland boss Sammy McIlroy.
