The
wonderful 2001-2002 season saw Malky Mackay emerge as a colossus in the Canary
defence. So often viewed as a cover player, Malky was simply inspirational
alongside Craig Fleming at the heart of the City defence.
The big Scot missed just two games all season and also popped up with four
goals. His goals included two all-important strikes, the first of which sealed
City a play-off place in the final game of the season and then seven days later
he headed the goal that effectively took the Canaries to Cardiff.
His performances saw him voted 3rd in the 'Player of the Year' award for the
second successive season as his popularity in the stands grew and grew. With
injury in the opening game of the campaign calling an end to Neil Emblen's
season and Vice Captain Iwan Roberts also missing a large chunk of the
second-half of the season, Malky also took up the Captain's armband, a role he
clearly relished.
Malky's consistent performances resulted in talk about international recognition
and a Scotland call-up can't surely be too far away if Malky continues to
perform in such an outstanding manner during 2002-03.
