Last
season could well be argued as 'King Kent's' best season to date. Not only did
the 23-year-old defender operate successfully in a number of positions across
the back four he also weighed in with four crucial goals too.
A product of the Canaries' youth system, Darren's positional sense, tackling and
distribution all improved as he showed just what an excellent defender he really
can be.
He scored the first of his four goals when he started the Canaries' goal spree
at Sheffield Wednesday as City wrapped up the year 2001 in style with a 5-0 win
at Hillsborough. Darren clearly enjoys scoring against the Sheffield sides as he
then proceeded to score both of the City goals in a 2-1 televised win over
Sheffield United at Carrow Road in February. Goal number four of the campaign
was the vital winner over Gillingham at Carrow Road which saw the Canaries come
from behind to start an amazing seven-game unbeaten run which saw the Club surge
through to the play-off final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
Although Steen Nedergaard and Daryl Sutch can also operate in the right-back
berth to offer competition to Darren, with his flexibility it is difficult to
see him not figuring somewhere in the Canary defence during 2002-03.
