Worthy: “The door is wide open.”

5 December, 2002

City Boss Nigel Worthington today said that the promotion race in Division One involves a lot of teams.

Worthy said: "There are 10 to 12 teams in it, the door is wide open for any team that stays injury and suspension free and can put a few results together.”

That certainly is true, as at the moment not counting Portsmouth who are currently running away from the other group at the top, there are only 6 points to separate the top five places.

At the start of the season not many people would have thought that a team like Reading would be just behind City at this stage in the season and this really shows what a close league this can be.

Commenting on the match ahead of City on Saturday, Worthy said: “If we reproduce the kind of passion and performance we managed in the playoffs against Wolves then I will be more than satisfied."

And the atmosphere will certainly be hot like it was in the play-offs, if not even hotter, as the home fans are still wounded from the previous occasion when Norwich met the boys from Molineux.

However, this shouldn’t cause a problem for the City stars, who dealt with the atmosphere at Molineux excellently last season, instead it will probably fuel them on even more.

Notman Could Be Out Until End Of Campaign

 4 December, 2002

After having an operation on his ankle yesterday, Nigel Worthington spoke today, saying that it is very likely the unlucky Scotsman will miss the rest of the season.

Notman was stretchered off injured in the Ipswich game at Portman Road in September when he blocked a ferocious free-kick from Mark Venus, which bent his foot awkwardly.

The operation yesterday removed some bone from the ankle area, which was causing the pain for Alex.

"It's hugely disappointing and frustrating as Alex had been playing very well before picking up what is, to say the least, a bit of an unusual injury." Boss Worthington commented at Colney today.

"We Must Win" Emblen Says

4 December, 2002

Neil Emblen today said that the match at Molineux between the Canaries and Wolves on Saturday is a "must win" match for City if they are to hold any realistic hopes of grabbing an automatic promotion place.

The former Wolves player will be hoping to force himself back into the squad for Saturday as he has a match tonight for the Reserves versus Cardiff City.

“They are a good side and have now put a good unbeaten run together,” said Emblen. “They will obviously want to get one over on us for last season but I think that they also blame themselves for what happened after throwing away a 10-point lead with only eight games to go,” he added.

“We are six points ahead of them at the moment and they would not want that to be nine. The recent history between to two clubs has set up Saturday nicely and is a must win match for both teams.

“I've been speaking to the lads and they're looking forward to the game. They loved playing the games at Molineux, it's a good stadium, and like going there and it certainly doesn't hold any fears for them" he added.

The 31-year-old indomitable midfielder is hoping, if selected, to receive a warm-welcome from the fans he served so admirably but as he confessed nothing can ever be taken for granted in football.

“I would hope that I got a warm reception from the crowd,” he said. “I was there for seven years in two spells with the club and I found the fans always backed me but you never do know.

Emblen said himself that he doesn't expect to be able to walk straight into the team and admits that he must work hard in training to earn the right to do so and he also said he is a bit disappointed with his consistency of performances since he has been back from injury.

The F.A. Slap Fine and Touchline Ban On Worthy

3 December, 2002

Nigel Worthington was today fined £500 and given a one-match touchline ban after being sent to the stand in the match versus Sheffield United at Carrow Road in September.

Worthington had made complaints to the fourth official over some decisions which the referee had made during the match, which was why he was asked to leave the dug-out and sit in the stand.

The match that day certainly was a bad one for City; manager sent off and the team lost 3-2.

It will be interesting to see how things are conducted on the touchline in Worthy's absence, with the quality of our coaches at Carrow Road, it really shouldn't be a great deal different to other matches.

Young Canaries Knock Out Holders Of FA Youth Cup

3 December, 2002

On Monday night, Norwich Under 19’s played at home to Aston Villa, who are the current holders of the cup competition.

Play was delayed for 15 minutes due to crowd congestion but once it got underway it was well worth the wait. The much-talked about Ian Henderson played in his second match in three days, and again, he was playing as a left winger.

Villa were first to attack but Aaron Osborne dealt with the danger and City scored their first after 27 minutes when a pass from Henderson found Batt whose shot from 25 yards found the back of the net.

Norwich weathered the storm from Villa well, mirroring the sort of performance typical of the senior team.

Nine minutes before half time, the young Canaries doubled their lead when Nicky Howell finished well after some good work from himself to get free.

The Canaries could have gone it at the break with another goal to their name, but Henderson failed to convert from a pass from Jarvis.

Just three minutes into the second half Villa were back In the game when Moore rifled the ball home into the top corner past a helpless Osborne.

Thankfully, City held on to the goal advantage and at the final whistle celebrated their success at beating the holders of the Youth Cup.

After the match Boothroyd commented: “Ian Henderson played out of position and did a fantastic job for the team,”.The thing about Hendo is that he is at the stage where he might be in the first team, then he's not in the first team. So we thought long and hard about it and decided the lad should play. That's the decision that was made. I am all for pushing the lads on, as is Sammy, and we want the younger ones to come through and this tournament is important.”
City will now face either Brighton or Wimbledon in the 3rd Round.

Hayes Joins Irons On A Free Transfer

3 December, 2002

After speculation of where his future lay, Paul Hayes today left Norwich for the last time to join Scunthorpe United.

The young striker never did make an appearance for the first team, despite being named as a substitute a couple of times last season.

Paul has agreed to finish off his last year of his scholarship programme at Scunthorpe, which will then total to three years scholarship at the end.

Worthington had sent Paul out to train with Torquay a few weeks back to "toughen him up a bit" as Worthy put it but now he has gone for good.

It has been confirmed that a sell-on clause has been agreed in the free transfer, so if Hayes moves to another club for a fee then Norwich will get some money from it.

He has found it hard to break into the first team due to the large amount of strikers ahead of him in the pecking order, such as Iwan Roberts, Paul McVeigh, David Nielsen, Zema Abbey, Alex Notman and now the emergence teenage sensation Ian Henderson.

Fans Back Iwan To Score Century

23 November, 2002

After two weeks of voting you decided that Iwan will reach the 100-goal milestone for City by a large majority of 80%. Thank you to everyone who voted.

McGovern Joins Posh

  22 November, 2002

It has been announced this morning that former Norwich defender Brian McGovern has joined struggling Peterborough United on a non-contract basis.

McGovern was released from Carrow Road earlier in the season by mutual consent as the 22-year old found first team appearances few and far between

He impressed Barry Fry enough when he played for Posh in a “behind closed doors” friendly against Arsenal earlier in the week, the Posh manager decided to sign him up.

It is a timely signing for Peterborough as Marc Joseph should be signing for Hull soon and it looks like McGovern will be thrown into the deep end, as Fry has named him in his squad to face Barnsley at London Road tomorrow.

Fry commented: “Brian adapted very well for us in the friendly and with Marc leaving us, we are a bit short of cover in defence. I am sure with the support from the fans he will settle in quickly here at London Road.”

Shortly after being released by Norwich McGovern joined up with Scottish Premier league outfit Livingston and the only reason why he didn’t stay there was because he would have had to wait until January to sign.

McGovern learnt his trade as a trainee at Arsenal before joining the Canaries in 2000 for £50,000.

Russell Could Face Burnley But Notman Still Plays The Waiting Game

21 November, 2002

He only returned to training last week but has already been tipped to replace Phil Mulryne in midfield on Saturday as City travel to Turf Moor to face 11th placed Burnley. Worthington has been singing his praises saying that his attitude is great and he has worked really hard to get fit.

On the darker side, Alex Notman is still injured and it was revealed today that he has been to London earlier in the week to see a specialist and he had some fluid drained off his ankle. A decision will be made some time next week to decide whether he will need an operation or not.

Notman picked up the injury at Portman Road in September when he charged down a free-kick. He has not trained or played since.

Southall Leaves City

20 November, 2002

Bolton Wanderers have today recalled Nicky Southall, who was meant to be on loan at City for three months. However, Bolton installed a clause in the contract, allowing them to call him back after 28 days. The reason for them calling Southall back early is because they have a few injuries and suspensions so he will act for cover for players such as Akin and N'Gotty who are both currently suspended.

Nigel Worthington said: "Thankfully Mark Rivers is now fit again and Darel Russell will also be available soon."

Worthington also thanked Nicky and Bolton and wished him every success in the future.

Southall was brought to Carrow Road to replace midfielders Russell, Notman and Rivers, who were all injured at the time. Southall made nine appearances for City, five of them as a sub.

Bolton signed Nicky on a free transfer in the summer of 2001 from one of City's Division One rivals, Gillingham.

Kenton Stalls Contract Talks

18 November, 2002

Darren's representatives have today delayed any contract discussions between Norwich Boss Nigel Worthington and the in-form defender, saying that he wants to wait until the end of the current season before he makes up his mind on any contract agreements.

In a press conference today, Worthy said " It soon became very clear that he wanted to wait and review all his options at a later stage. Therefore no offer was made to Darren."

Worthington continued: “I respect Darren’s right to explore all his options under the present ‘Bosman Ruling’ regulations.  Obviously I would like him to stay with Norwich City and he may well do, similar to Phil Mulryne last season"

Nigel Worthington also said he was confident that young star Kenton will continue giving 100% and hopes that his good form will continue.

All Norwich fans will be hoping that City can keep hold of their player that was raised through the ranks at Carrow Road because if Norwich and Kenton can't come to an agreement the player will be able to leave for free on the Bosman Ruling issue at the end of the season. And it would be most likely that he will head to a Premiership club as a few big names have been mentioned this season, supposedly watching Darren in action at Carrow Road.

Kenton commented: "Obviously I want to play in the Premier League and hopefully that's with Norwich. If we go up, then there'll be no problem in signing."

So far this season Kenton has played 17 games (he has missed just one match), scoring one goal. If Kenton is missing from the team, then it will be hard to replace such a "rock" at the heart of the City defence.

Show Your Support For "The Posh"

 14 November, 2002

After a few requests from City fans, who have visited this site, we at yellowarmy.co.uk have decided to show our support for our East Anglian neighbours Peterborough by getting as many people as possible to sign their book in opposition to Victoria Beckham's claims.

You are all probably well aware of the issue between former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and Division Two Football Club, Peterborough United.

As if Peterborough didn't have enough to worry about with their ongoing financial problems, Ms Beckham has decided to make it a little worse for the Division Two side.

Ms Beckham has informed Peterborough of her intentions to challenge them for the use of the trademark "Posh".

Peterborough first heard of this news from their own Trademark Agency and since then have posted a lot of news on their official website, http://www.theposh.com.

This is what Ms Beckham's website says: "Whilst Victoria accepts that Peterborough are nicknamed "The Posh" and might want to use the name in association with football products there is no conceivable reason why they should need blanket coverage for every class of goods."

"The name "Posh" is inexorably associated with Victoria Beckham in the public's mind and the concern from her is that they (the public) would think she had in some way endorsed products she had no knowledge of."

Now, to us this is ridiculous, Victoria Beckham has only be known as "Posh" for six years but Peterborough have been known as it for decades. This just seems to me that she is just becoming far too selfish. It will be a injustice if "The Posh" lose out on this case.

Please show your support for the REAL Posh by clicking here and signing their Supportbook.

You can also talk about this issue on our Message Board.

Holt Backs Iwan To Score Century

13 November, 2002

Gary Holt today said that he believed there would be no stopping Roberts now that he has scored his 85th goal for City.

Holt reckons that Iwan's previous dip in form was due to him being so close to a career milestone. Holt said: "It was on his mind. He missed a penalty at Bradford a few weeks back and it started to eat away at him." Commenting on his penalty success versus Wednesday last Saturday Holt added: "He showed a lot of character to take another and it was like a weight being lifted from his shoulders."

What do you think? Will Iwan reach 100 goals for City? Please take part in our poll by clicking here

Trip to Vicarage Road Rearranged

12 November, 2002

The Canaries' visit to Watford scheduled for Saturday, January 8th is now to be played on Sunday 9th January, thanks to Sky TV televising the match. Please note, the kick-off is now 12pm. This will be Norwich's second televised match this season.

Talks Between Ipswich And Ashley Ward Break Down

12 November, 2002

The proposed deal between Ashley Ward and Ipswich has broken down due to Ward not wanting to move to Ipswich on a temporary basis. The conversations between the player and Ipswich finished yesterday as Ward made it clear he didn’t want to be loaned. Ipswich manager Joe Royle said: “Ashley is looking for a more permanent move and unfortunately that is not possible for us at the moment."

Bradford are looking to offload Ward as they are in financial turmoil, like most clubs in the Football League and it is no secret that he is one of the highest paid players in the Bradford squad.

There is speculation that Royle is also looking for more defensive cover and it is reported that he is looking seriously into bringing out-of-favour Leeds defender Michael Duberry to Portman Road.

Mulryne To Miss Clarets Clash

11 November, 2002

Canary midfielder Phil Mulryne will miss the Canaries' match versus Burnley on Saturday 23rd November due to accumulating 5 yellow cards this season. Mulryne will serve a one match suspension due to him getting booked for the fifth time on Saturday, when he fouled Wednesday striker Gerald Sibon. Likely replacements for Mulryne will be either Nicky Southall or Neil Emblen.

Mackay Joins Kenton, Mulryne and Emblen On Medical Table

7 November, 2002

Defender Malky Mackay has been added to the injury list this week. Manager Nigel Worthington told a packed press conference what exactly happened:

"Well he's tweaked his groin in training at the start of the week, so we've got a few injuries now with Emblen, Kenton and Mulryne all struggling. It's not a pleasant situation, but it's one you have got to face up to. Hopefully one or two of the injured will get up off the treatment table and be fit and ready for Saturday. But if not, you look to the rest and even consider one or two of the younger ones."

"We've got young Greg Crane and Jason Shackell, so there is a couple of younger lads with potential. But it's one of those scenarios where it may be a little bit too soon for them but who knows? If we don't have sufficient numbers fit it may be a case of throwing them in at the deep end and seeing if they sink or swim.

"That's where the Club is at now not having the biggest numbers of professional players to work with, but it's a wonderful chance for the youths and individuals to work very hard and get to know the senior lads, train with them and if they're good enough, throw them in and see how they do"

City Trio Still Injured

 5 November, 2002

Canaries boss Nigel Worthington today confirmed that midfielders Phil Mulryne and Neil Emblen along with defender Darren Kenton had still not returned to training after their recent injuries sustained in the Forest match.

Emblen and Mulryne are both suffering from groin injuries whilst Kenton has damaged the back of his knee. They will be closely monitored from now until Saturday with the hope of them being able to play.

Worthy Not Pleased With Wimbledon Performance

2 November, 2002

Canaries' manager Nigel Worthington refused to make excuses after the Canaries slumped to a disappointing 4-2 defeat against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

It was the Canaries' fourth game without a win, and even a gutsy second-half fight back - including a first senior goal for the Club from 17-year-old Ian Henderson - failed to provide much cheer for players and fans alike.

Worthington commented: "What's been happening over the last few games we need to look at very carefully and look at what we need to do to get everybody back on their toes. We have to shake things up a bit because that just wasn't good enough.

"For the first hour or so we had too many pasengers thinking they could just walk it and that simply isn't acceptable. You can't give teams a lead like that, it's criminal.

"We owe the fans who have paid good money to watch us a and much better performance against Sheffield Wednesday is needed next Saturday."

Kenton and Mulryne Doubtful for Dons Clash

31 October, 2002

Both Darren Kenton and Phil Mulryne are almost certain to miss Norwich's away match against Wimbledon Saturday. Darren Kenton was substituted after just 30 minutes in the Forest match due to a back injury and midfield ace Phil Mulryne was taken off in the second half with a groin strain.

This is certainly a set-back for the Canaries, who are looking to get back on track after gaining just two points from their last three games. The likely replacements for the two casulties are Craig Fleming and Nicky Southall, who is on loan from Bolton Wanderers.
